Waterstone...One small snippet to add to the debate.
Waterstones were invited to run a book shop for the NAWE conference, a two'day, two evening event attended by writers who are also teaching writing throughout the UK at schools, universities...
There were two keynote events. First, Graham Swift on Friday night, being intereviewed about his processes as a writer, his career, his inspirations. Second, poet Wendy Cope, last night, a reading and a talk.
A lesser event - the launch of Short Circuit.

Experience tells me that they are not good at getting the right books to the right places, for events.

True to form... Graham Swift arrived... the lecture room was packed. over a hundred people, of whom many would have loved to buy his books, get them signed.

Waterstones forgot to bring his books.

Wendy Cope... same scenario.

They had some of mine, strangely, and nicely of them. After the launch a few people asked for my collection. Waterstones had packed up and gone. Taking all the books they had, with them.

Summat is not working!Vanessa Gebbiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00833187671441310234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26654079.post-54553328577622907972009-11-14T23:25:01.831+00:002009-11-14T23:25:01.831+00:00I must say I hadn't even realized they had a g...I must say I hadn't even realized they had a gifts section!Elizabeth Baineshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17193751871434773972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26654079.post-23956461259739265312009-11-14T16:55:51.965+00:002009-11-14T16:55:51.965+00:00A very sensible analysis Elizabeth. Maybe they only exist because they behave the way they do, maybe that's what they can afford to do. Custoemrs are part of the problem! However, the last time I was in a Waterstones I bought 10 items only 3 of which were books. I actually went to buy books but found little to tempt me. Their gifts section which included such non-book items as a kit for growings herbs were much more tempting. Yet I spend £100s a year on books, why could I find so little to buy?Juxtabookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17102279698993288454noreply@blogger.com
