I have wondered why the books (good or bad) you read on holiday tend to stick in your head, often years later, even if you are reading contemporary fiction that is not a million miles from your surroundings - whereas the rest of the time books often blur (for me, at least!). Maybe cos you are in such a relaxed state on holiday, the narratives really embed themselves.
